Hydrostatic Testing of Fire Extinguishers

Hydrostatic testing (Hydrotest) is a critical safety test required to ensure that the cylinder of your fire extinguisher can still safely hold the pressure of the extinguishing agent. When is it Required?

  • Dry Chemical Powder (DCP): Every 5 years.
  • Foam extinguishers: Every 3 years.
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers: Every 5 years.
  • Clean Agent extinguishers: Every 5 years.
  • If the cylinder shows signs of deep corrosion, dents, or damage.
  • When exposed to excessive heat or fire.

The Testing Procedure

  • Internal and external visual inspection for defects.
  • Emptying and removal of valves and components.
  • Filling the cylinder with water to required test capacity.
  • Applying specified hydrostatic pressure (e.g., 35 kg/cm2) in a secure chamber.
  • Checking for pressure drops, leaks, or deformation.
  • Drying, reassembling, refilling, and stamping test date.
