Fire Safety Audit Checklist

Fire Safety Audit Checklist for Factories & Industries

The Importance of Factory Fire Safety Audits

Manufacturing units, warehouses, and industrial plants face elevated fire hazards due to high-voltage equipment, flammable raw materials, welding sparks, and continuous machine friction. Conducting regular fire safety audits is both a statutory requirement and essential insurance against devastating financial and human loss.

Essential Factory Fire Safety Audit Checklist

  • 1. Portable & Wheeled Fire Extinguishers:
    • Appropriate extinguisher types (ABC dry powder, high-capacity wheeled CO2 units, mechanical foam) installed within every 15 meters of travel distance.
    • All units are unobstructed, mounted at the mandated height, and have clear identification signage.
    • Pressure gauges are in the green zone, and monthly visual inspection tags are up to date.
  • 2. Suppression Systems & Hydrants:
    • Automatic suppression systems (Clean Agent / CO2 / Inert Gas) installed in main HT/LT panels and transformer rooms.
    • Fire hydrant lines maintain consistent pressure (minimum 3.5 bar at highest point) with hoses intact.
    • Automatic sprinkler heads have a minimum 18-inch clearance from stored inventory.
  • 3. Means of Escape & Emergency Exits:
    • Clear, illuminated fire exit signs visible from all shop floor corners.
    • Emergency exit doors must open outward and never be locked or padlocked during operational shifts.
    • Gangways and evacuation paths clearly demarcated with bright yellow paint lines.
  • 4. Refilling & Hydrostatic Testing Records:
    • Extinguisher refilling logs verified according to IS: 2190 guidelines.
    • Hydrostatic pressure testing (hydrotest) certificates up to date for all high-pressure cylinders.
